Hi, I’m Darlene Panzera, an adventurer, author, and mom, and I’d like to share 5 reasons why I decided to buy Lowa Women’s Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots.
Last year I bought a pair of hiking boots from another company that felt great when I tried them on in the store, but when I started hiking in them, they didn’t quite feel right. I kept telling myself they still needed to be broken in and that they’d be okay. I was so wrong! After several months of smaller hikes, I took a 6-mile hike to a fire tower in Washington’s Cascade Mountains and when I removed my boots my toes felt like they were on fire! The pain was almost unbearable. I had to face the fact that these boots were the wrong fit and I ended up giving them away to someone else even though I had spent over two hundred dollars on them.
This year when I went to buy new boots, I was more cautious. Below are a few of the deciding factors that led me to buy a pair of Lowa brand hiking boots:
1) REVIEWS
The LOWA Women's Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots seemed like a top choice because they have so many great reviews and were inducted in the Editor’s Choice 25th Anniversary Hall of Fame by Backpacker magazine (2018).
2) WATERPROOF
The LOWA boots are also waterproof (Goretex), which is good for stomping across streams over the trail. No wet feet for me!
3) LIGHTWEIGHT
When I picked them up, I was surprised at how lightweight they were—not like my heavy clunky boots from years ago. Weighing in at 2 lbs 3 oz. they aren’t the lightest boots on the market but are considered a mid-weight boot. To me, they feel wonderful.
4) COMFORTABLE
Although you can buy LOWA boots from Amazon and several other sources online, I went to our local REI store so I could try them on. After my last experience I was going to make sure I had the right size and the right fit. REI also has a fake rock hill in their store so you can see how the boots feel when you climb.
I tried on many other pairs of boots and what I liked about these were that the soles felt good. There weren’t any weird humps or bumps that have awkwardly hurt my feet in the past. The LOWA Renegade uses leather and a stiff sole to provide support, rather than excess padding underfoot. They are also available in WIDE, which made them feel even better! And the Renegade's nubuck leather upper securely holds the foot in place, reducing strain on the toes during downhill sections. That means no more black and blue toenails, another bonus.
Okay, so this is store-related instead of product-related, but definitely worth a shout-out. You see, after buying the wrong boots last time, I was still skeptical about purchasing another pair without being able to test them out in the field. Almost as if the salesperson read my mind, he said that if you buy the Lowa boots at REI, you have up to a year to return them if you decide they aren’t the right boots for you. He said, “Go on a long hike with them. If in eight months or so you decide you don’t like the fit, bring them back. You don’t even need a receipt because we have your name in our computer that you bought them.”
Wow! That was the clincher for me! What did I have to lose?
I bought the LOWA boots and put them to the test. Yep! Even new, these boots are extremely comfortable and after hiking around in them for a few months, I still I love them!
