LifeStraw Go 2 Water Bottle: Hiking Gear Review
No one wants to go on a trip and get sick, whether it is a vacation or a backpacking adventure. Filtering the water you drink while out on the trail is extremely important. No mater how pristine the water may appear to be, there is always the chance that there could be bacteria or a parasite such as Giardia that can cause illness. So for today's hiking gear review, I will be featuring the LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with 2-Stage Integrated Filter Straw for Hiking.
Quick Disclaimer:
I bought my LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with my own money and have no obligation to write a positive review everything written is my own personal opinions after using this product on multiple hiking and backpacking trips.
I bought my LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with a 2 stage filter straw 3 years ago and I absolutely love it. I try to get out and do a hike at least once every two weeks and I usually can hit the trail every week during the summer months. I bring my LifeStraw water filter with me on every hike, clipped onto my day pack. Hiking primarily in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, streams are plentiful, and I enjoy not having to always fill my 2 liter Hydration Bladder Water Bag to full capacity. I know that on most hikes I am constantly passing by rivers and streams and the end destination is often to a beautiful alpine lake where I can fill up my LifeStraw. When backpacking this past summer I would stop and get fresh water at every stream. It was nice not having to wait 30 minutes for water purification iodine tablets to make the water safe to drink. This decreased the need to carry as much water which lightened my pack load while backpacking by quite a bit. When trekking over 35 miles with extreme elevation gains, my worn out body and fatigued legs greatly appreciated cutting out every extra pound that I possibly could.
So what exactly is the LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with 2-Stage Integrated Filter Straw for Hiking?
The Lifestraw Go Water Filter Bottle filter removes 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.99 percent of protozoa, including giardia, cryptosporidium, and e-coli. It uses an advanced hollow fiber membrane (0.2 microns) to remove waterborne bacteria and protozoa up to 4,000 liters (1,000 gallons). After filtering 1,000 gallons, replacement hollow fiber membrane cartridges are available. The carbon capsule in the Life Straw can reduce bad taste, chlorine and organic chemical matter for up to 100 liters (26 gallons).
This cool water filter weighs only 7.8 oz (221 g) and has a sleek design. It is great for backpacking, eliminating the need to carry some bulkier pumps that weigh 15 oz or more. Using the Life Straw is simple. Just simply fill from a stream or pond. Scoop water from the closest stream, puddle or pond, and drink. No need to pump or wait for chemicals to react. It is one of the fastest, easiest ways to filter water on the trail. Ideal for hiking and camping. With a lightweight, leak-proof design, and high flow rate, the LifeStraw Go is perfect for outdoor adventures that require a reliable water filter.
One of the best things about The LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with 2-Stage Integrated Filter Straw for Hiking is that it removes an impressive 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, and 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites without the use of chemicals, iodine or batteries. Right here is a document from the University of Arizona, an independent source from LifeStraw, that got the same results. Click to read.
I really enjoy having the ability to quickly be able to fill up and have fresh water at each river I pass along the trail.

One really cool thing that I love about LifeStraw is their Follow the Liters program. I would be buying a water filter for backpacking anyway but I can feel good about purchasing LifeStraw products for myself and family and friends because through their Follow the Liters Program every LifeStraw you purchase, one school child in a developing country receives safe clean drinking water for an entire year. Here is a map of all the schools that have received safe drinking water since the beginning of the program in Kenya. Click Here.
The LifeStraw Go 2-stage filtration water bottle is available in a variety of different colors.
So my review is that I think The LifeStraw Go Water Filter Bottle with 2-Stage Integrated Filter Straw for Hiking is absolutely amazing! I love love love this product and will continue using this on my hiking adventures. I also plan on bringing it with me when traveling to Nepal next year. Two years ago on a Florida trip, from the drinking water at a resort I was staying at or maybe from a drinking fountain or restaurant, I got Giardia lamblia, a intestinal parasite. After feeling absolutely miserable after the trip, and lots of antibiotics, I decided I will bring my Life Straw with me when traveling so I do not need to worry about getting sick from the water on a trip again. The only negative to this amazing product is that the filter can get clogged where it is very hard to suck water through the straw if you do not clean and keep your life straw properly. Just follow the directions and remove the excess water from the bottle and let air dry and this product works great! So in summery, this is a cool piece of hiking gear that I bought two years ago and I love using and highly recommend. I Would love to hear how you filter your water on the trail?
